Whittlesea Rail Trail Landscape Master Plan

Parks and Trails

Project Specifics

Location: Mernda, Whittlesea

Consultancy Services: Master Planning

Overview

ACLA was engaged to prepare a master plan for the proposed Whittlesea Rail Trail. The trail will extend for 10km generally following the alignment of the former railway line, which was decommissioned in 1959. The project presented many challenges in identifying and satisfying social, environmental, cultural, economic and historical values of the site and broader context.

The proposed Whittlesea Rail Trail will allow residents, businesses and visitors to experience the rich cultural heritage and ecological diversity of the region. It will significantly contribute to establishing a safe, off-road, shared-use trail for pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders between Whittlesea Township and the future Town Centre of Mernda. The trail will be serviced with rest points, amenities, additional landscaping and interpretation devices to inform and educate users of the site’s heritage and raise public environmental awareness. It will become a premier tourist attraction in Whittlesea with additional economic benefit for local businesses and the community.
