White Street Mall Redevelopment

Urban Design and Renewal

Project Specifics

Location: Frankston

Consultancy Services: Schematic Design, Design Development, Contract Documentation

Important aspects of the brief were to create an atmosphere to attract new tenants and subsequently users into vacant shops, veil and soften surrounding building facades, provide a safer environment at night, and improve access between the shopping centre to the north and Wells Street to the south. This is achieved through the integration of mature trees planted along the western part of the mall to buffer strong winds and moderate the scale of surrounding buildings. Trees are planted within an intricate arrangement of porphyry cobblestones carefully articulated to allow rainwater to infiltrate into the root zone. Custom curved seats provide areas to relax and watch passersby. Feature lights are centrally placed along the north-south axis providing upward illumination of adjacent building facades and downward lighting to improve safety at night. The mall has been transformed into a vibrant, attractive, usable public space both day and night, which has been home to art installations and community festivals.
