Queen Victoria Market Food Court Refurbishment

Urban Design and Renewal

Project Specifics

Location: Queen Victoria Market, Melbourne

Consultancy Services: Schematic Design, Design Development, Contract Documentation, Contract Administration

Overview

ACLA reviewed the functionality and aesthetics of the QVM food court in relation with its cultural heritage and maintenance regime. The refurbishment of the food court accentuates key architectural forms and features through mood lighting, standardises the suite of furniture to provide visual integration and consistency, and improves the circulation and dining experience for patrons and visitors. Central to the upgrade is the inclusion of a bar/kiosk at the Queen Street end which faces onto both the Queen Street frontage and the food court interior. The pendent ‘hedgehog’ light sculptures provide a focal point by day and night and break up the visual mass of the shade membrane.

The upgrade forms part of a line of capital works projects which seek to improve visitor amenity and ‘placemaking’ opportunities around the market.
