The redevelopment of the Boys Middle School provided an opportunity to re-program activities within the courtyard space. Central to the design is an avenue of trees providing shade to lunch areas, informal seating and ball courts. The courtyard is graded to passively irrigate trees and a sub-surface root cell system ensures they remain uncompromised by compacted soil within the paved context. Honed block work retaining walls, with a balustrade that complements the new building, separate the existing raised terrace from the courtyard. Stair locations, providing access between the raised terrace and courtyard, have been carefully considered to facilitate efficient circulation through the central space. Informal seating areas reference the building footprint of the demolished Library acting as a metaphoric ruin, characterised by masonry bench seating and paved banding. The new courtyard design provides a flexible and functional space, linking new and old buildings and providing an enjoyable environment for students and staff.
