Awards: Parks & Leisure Australia Playspace Award (Category C) for Brimbank Park Regional Playspace, 2015

Parks Victoria engaged ACLA in collaboration with Ric McConaghy to design a sustainable and an all-inclusive regional playspace within Brimbank Park. The design is inspired by the park’s cultural heritage and the surrounding flora and fauna. Defined by a number of key areas, the design focuses on providing all abilities access to natural and structured play elements, utilising the existing topography of the site and its native bushland surrounds. Each area is defined by sinuous pathways, rockwork seating walls and steps, interspersed with patches of vegetation, creating a shaded, naturalistic and engaging environment with opportunities for physical and imaginative play. The playspace is punctuated by a number of art elements including vegetable sculptures, a cow seat, a giant scalable platypus and a 3m high tree sculpture at the highest point of the site, featuring an accessible nest with a 360º view. Play structures include a wheelchair accessible sandpit, an interactive and informative maze, sound elements, shelter frames, flying foxes, rope climbing nets, embankment slides, swings, rotor wheels and spinners.
