Designed by Jackson and Walker Architects and opened in 1978 the Balwyn Library is Boroondara City Council’s busiest library branch. The proposed upgrade to the existing building and landscape will improve its functionality to meet the current and future needs of the community while preserving the integrity and appeal of the original library. Employing Environmentally Sustainable Design (ESD) principles the new landscape design incorporates an extensive green roof, permeable paving to the car park and a reconfiguration and revitalisation of the bush garden with drought resistant indigenous species. It also includes improved all abilities access through the site with the removal of kerbs in the car park. Proposed large canopy trees to the car park will utilise on site water resources and provide shade. In addition to this, the upgraded access and extra bicycle facilities improve the connectivity and amenity for cyclists, encouraging sustainable modes of transport.
